Glossary
  • GPX: Short for GPSeXchange. This is the new standard navigation route file format for GPS units. It is used by Google, later Garmin SatNavs and a host of other companies.

  • PCX5: A navigation route file format for older Garmin SatNavs.

  • ITN: A navigation route file format for TomTom SatNavs.

  • MN4, MN5, MN6, MN7: Successive navigation route file formats for Navigon SatNavs.

  • Waypoint: A specific location you want to drive through, however you might not necessarily be stopping there. For example if you don't like the route suggested to get from point A to point B, you could add point C to the route as a waypoint to force the route to go via that location, taking your desired route.

  • Destination: A specific location where you will be making one of your stops in your daily journey.

  • Point of interest, or POI, is a specific point location that someone may find useful or interesting. The term is widely used in GPS navigation software. In this area the location of this point is called a waypoint.

A GPS point of interest consists at the very minimum of the latitude and longitude of the POI, although a name or description for the POI is usually included too. GPS applications typically use icons to represent different categories of POI on a map graphically.
